For many people, going to the dentist is one of the most nerve-racking things out there. You may be one of them, so it might make getting the oral care you need much more difficult. One way that your provider can make these visits easier is by offering dental sedation. It’s a handy tool that helps you relax, but there are many misconceptions around it. Here are three common myths and the truth behind them.
Myth #1: Dental Sedation Will Make You Go to Sleep
One concern that patients often have is whether dental sedation will make them fall asleep or if they’ll be unconscious while they get it. However, this isn’t the case at all! Regardless of whether it’s nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) or oral conscious sedation, you won’t be put to sleep because of it.
Instead, you may feel so relaxed and euphoric that you doze off on your own. The comfort you feel is to blame, but you can be easily awoken with a couple of gentle nudges. Not only that, but you will still be able to answer simple questions and follow directions.
Myth #2: Sedation Is Unsafe to Get
As was mentioned above, there are a couple of different types of dental sedation. Both are very safe because your dentist takes a bunch of different factors into account. For instance, they will likely want to hear about any current health conditions, medications, previous experiences with sedatives, allergies, and pregnancy. Be completely open and honest about your medical history to help ensure it’s a great option for you!
Myth #3: You Can Only Get Dental Sedation During Complex Treatments
Since sedation is used to help you feel calmer, you may imagine it can only be used during more in-depth and complex treatments, like a tooth extraction or root canal. Thankfully, you can even use it for these and minor services, like routine cleanings.
Each type of sedation offers a different relaxation strength, so you can choose the milder option, laughing gas, for these appointments. Better yet, this one also doesn’t have any lasting or lingering effects, so you can drive yourself home or go about your day right away once you’re all done!
Although you may feel nervous about going to the dentist, they are here to make it as easy as possible for you. By talking to your provider about your fears, you can then learn more about how dental sedation may be the right choice for you. Listen to the facts and don’t let myths stop you from getting the treatments you need to have a strong smile.
